The story
TOI-700 d was announced in January 2020 as the first Earth-sized planet in a habitable zone found by NASA’s TESS. Its star is a red dwarf much smaller and dimmer than the Sun; the planet circles it in 37 days and receives about 86 % of the light Earth gets. It is probably tidally locked.
In 2023 TOI-700 e (radius ≈ 0.95 Earths, also in the habitable zone) was found around the same star; it is among the best targets for the habitability of small rocky worlds. Whether it has an atmosphere is not known yet.
Missions
- TESS (NASA, 2018–): the discovery
- Spitzer: confirmation
- JWST: the atmosphere search
Colony note
May be rocky; a Mk2 shield and cryo sleep. Orrun territory.
What probes bring back
- Found by TESS in 2020: about 101 light-years, near Earth size (≈ 1.07 Earths) and in the habitable zone; a year of 37 days.
- The star is a dim red dwarf; in 2023 another Earth-size planet (e) was found in the habitable zone.
