The story
Core Outpost stands in a very thickly shielded port around the black hole Sgr A* at the centre of the Milky Way. The black hole has 4.3 million solar masses; the Event Horizon Telescope published its image in 2022. The star S2 circles it every 16 years.
The radiation here is intense; the outpost takes power only from reactors and 100 RTGs. 26,000 light-years from the Solar System: the Empire’s brightest stop in the sky.

What probes bring back
