The story
LHS 3844 b is a rocky super-Earth found by TESS in 2018, circling its star in 11 hours. In 2019 Spitzer measured the day-side temperature: about 770 °C, which means there is no thick atmosphere, since an atmosphere would carry the heat to the night side.
It was the first measurement of the absence of an atmosphere on a rocky exoplanet. The surface is dark rock that looks like volcanic basalt: a hotter cousin of Mercury and the Moon.
Missions
- TESS (NASA, 2018): the discovery
- Spitzer (2019): the day-side temperature
Colony note
Airless hot rock; a Mk2 shield. Kesh territory.
What probes bring back
- Found by TESS (2018); about 49 light-years, radius ≈ 1.3 Earths, a year of 11 hours.
- Spitzer (2019) showed the day side to be bare rock with no atmosphere: the first measurement of an airless rocky exoplanet.
