The story
Kepler-1649 c is an Earth-sized planet found in Kepler’s archive in 2020. It lies in the habitable zone of a red dwarf, circles in 19.5 days and gets about 75 % of the light Earth does: the candidate in Kepler data most like Earth in size and temperature.
The planet had been wrongly thrown out as ‘noise’ by Kepler’s automated screening software; a manual look by Andrew Vanderburg brought it back. It lies close to a 9:4 resonance with the star’s inner planet b.
Missions
- Kepler (NASA, 2009–2018): archive data
- Future: JWST and the Habitable Worlds Observatory
Colony note
May be rocky; a Mk2 shield and cryo sleep. Sythe territory.
What probes bring back
- Found in 2020 in old Kepler data: about 301 light-years, radius ≈ 1.06 Earths, receiving about 75 % of the light Earth gets.
- The automated pipeline had rejected it as noise; a researcher looking by hand found it: the most Earth-like candidate in Kepler data.
