The story

Dysnomia is Eris’s only moon, and the body that let us weigh Eris: from its orbital motion Eris turned out to be 27 % more massive than Pluto. Mike Brown’s team found it in 2005 with Keck in Hawaii, nicknamed ‘Gabrielle’; it was then named for Eris’s daughter, the spirit of lawlessness (Eris being the goddess of strife).

About 700 km across; its surface looks dark, unlike Eris’s bright ice. In the game, one of the farthest ‘moon’ visits beyond the Kuiper belt.

Missions

  • Hubble and Keck observations
  • No mission planned

Colony note

No colony; an observation outpost beside Eris.

What probes bring back

  • Eris’s moon, ≈700 km across, circling in 15.8 days: that motion showed Eris to be 27 % more massive than Pluto.
  • Discovered in 2005 in Hawaii; named for Dysnomia, Eris’s daughter, the spirit of lawlessness.
